The Strength of Mind Program
Applying mental health training to everyday life.
We designed the Strength of Mind program for children aged ten and older. We worked with counselling and wellbeing staff members to deliver it across four sports: football, touch, netball and basketball.
Our program taught kids how to apply mental health and wellbeing tools to everyday life. The counselling staff noticed a positive impact in engaging the entire student body, not just the kids at risk of mental illness.
By the program’s final day, thirty students said they were actively using the mental health strategies they had learnt. Examples ranged from remaining calm during an exam to managing stressful situations. These results demonstrated the potential for play-based learning to impact social wellbeing and academic performance positively.
We worked with a group of 132 students. The statistical summary showed
%
said they improved their ability to pay attention,
%
said they improved their ability to observe their thoughts,
%
found it easier to be aware of their emotions,
%
found it easier to be self-compassionate when experiencing fear or worry,
%
learnt to view failure as part of the learning process,
%
found it easier to trust themselves when challenged.
What families say about our Strength of Mind program.
“This was the first time Sarah said she learnt about mental health without feeling like there was something wrong with her. She really enjoyed the class and said learning through play made the training easy to apply to normal life.”

some personal challenges, which set a good foundation mentally moving forward. The feedback was spot on, and you did a great job coaching the group.”
